Savoca on Your Own: Bar Vitelli, the Church and the Mummies

The Godfather village without a tour: the bus via Santa Teresa, the parking, what Bar Vitelli is really like, the church reopened in 2026, and the 37 mummies.

Updated October 2026

Savoca is a village of about 1,750 people spread over a ridge at 300 metres above the coast, with a historic centre of a few hundred, twenty kilometres north of Taormina. It is on the official list of Italy’s most beautiful villages, and it would be worth the climb with no film at all. The film is why you searched, so here is the film first, and then the village the tours drive past.

Bar Vitelli

The bar is on Piazza Fossia, the small square at the entrance to the old centre, on the ground floor of the eighteenth-century Palazzo Trimarchi. It is a working café — by the family’s own account, theirs since 1963, before the production arrived in August 1971 — and the sign the studio hung on it for Michael’s scene was never taken down. Inside, the walls carry the photographs from the shoot; the convention is that you look at them with a granita in your hand rather than a ticket. The lemon granita was the house speciality before Coppola and is the correct order; it costs a few euros.

Two corrections to what you will have read. The bar’s own display says the actor Saro Urzì, who plays Signor Vitelli, suggested Savoca to the production — not that it was Coppola’s favourite anything. And the chair the listings call Brando’s is nothing of the kind: Brando never filmed in Sicily. The chair that matters is at the castle, from Michael’s death scene — though the tour that takes you inside calls its photo-stop chair Coppola’s.

Since 2026 the palazzo also has three suites upstairs. The stainless-steel statue of Coppola on the square is by Nino Ucchino.

Hours: the published ones disagree — 9:00 to 20:30 in one listing, to 21:00 in season in another, “until 17:30” on the bar’s own social media, “closes in winter” in a third — so phone the number on barvitelli.it before you build a day around it. Tours stop in late morning, which is the safe window.

The wedding church

From the piazza, the lane climbs to the church of San Nicolò on the ridge — the tours call it Santa Lucia, which is a nickname for the same building, and it is not the “San Nicolò di Bari” that some maps place in the next village west. The wedding was shot on the steps and the forecourt, and the procession was filmed coming down Via San Michele to the old town gate; the interior was never used.

For most of the last four years the church was shut: the roof was damaged in 2018 and again in autumn 2021 and the building was closed while it was rebuilt and the interior restored. It reopened in August 2026 for the Santa Lucia feast. A visitor that month reports a €2 entry charge and hours of about 9:30 to 18:30 — one report, not a timetable.

The mummies

The thing the Godfather tours skip, and the reason Savoca had visitors before 1971. In the crypt of the Capuchin convent, founded in the early seventeenth century at the top of the village, lie thirty-seven mummified notables of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries — priests, lawyers, landowners — seventeen of whom were long displayed standing in niches in their own clothes. The oldest is a notary who died in 1776; the latest a don Giuseppe Trischitta, 1876. The bodies were dried for sixty days in a chamber beneath the mother church before being dressed. You will read “32” in several guides; the count is 37.

Hours and charge are, like everything in Savoca, reported inconsistently — 9:00 to 19:00 in one source, guided mornings and afternoons in another, free with a donation or €3 to €5. There are two local phone numbers in circulation; ask at the bar. Also on the ridge: the Museo Storico Etnoantropologico on Via San Michele (€2), the church of San Michele with its two Gothic-Sicilian portals, the Chiesa Madre, the old gate, and the ruin of the Castello Pentefur above everything, reached by an unmarked fifteen-minute path.

Getting there

HowWhat it costs
BusInterbus from Taormina’s Via Pirandello terminal to Santa Teresa di Riva, 30–40 min; then the local bus up the hill, about 10 min — but only about two a day, and sources disagree on the operator and times€2–3 to Santa Teresa; under €2 up the hill
Bus + taxiThe same coach to Santa Teresa, then a taxi up — the local advice€10–15 for the taxi
CarTaormina to Bar Vitelli is 21 km: the coast road to Santa Teresa, then the SP19 climb; 35–45 minutes with trafficFree car park at the village entrance by the piazza — 30 to 40 spaces, full by eleven on summer weekends; a larger pay lot lower down on Via Pineta
TourPickup at your hotel, a guide, Savoca and then Forza d’Agrò, back to your hotel in half a dayFrom about $67

Public transport will get you to Savoca and back. What it will not do is add Forza d’Agrò the same day — the village that played Corleone’s square in all three films is twelve kilometres and a separate bus line away — and that, rather than Savoca itself, is the tour’s real argument.

Powerd by GetYourGuide

If you go alone, go in the morning, order the granita, climb to the church, and then keep climbing to the convent — the half of Savoca that is not in any film is the half you will remember. Every location of the trilogy, film by film, is on the next page.

Village facts from the comune’s own pages and national statistics; the church’s closure and reopening from the parish and local press; bus fares and frequencies from the operators’ timetables as published in October 2026, which contradict each other where we have said so.
